Writers or Righters…?

I was just watching the Turner Movie Channel and they did a tribute to the people of the arts that have passed away during the previous year…far too many as always. What moved me was the passing of some really terrific and extraordinary writers and their vision and particular view of the world leaving with them.

That’s when I realized that what is extraordinary about these writers is their ability to put us there in the moment. Through the alchemy of Writing.

Like Magicians, taking us back thru time and putting us into a tender or terrifying moment and giving us with that sight into that moment’s reality the compassion to understand what the price was to the cost of being there in that moment of time. This is magic. This is writing.

  1. I found a definition online describing alchemy as “both a philosophy and an ancient practice focused on the attempt to change base metals into gold, investigating the preparation of the “elixir of longevity”, and achieving ultimate wisdom, involving the improvement of the alchemist as well as the making of several substances described as possessing unusual properties.

What an apt description of writing. Changing the mundane into the valuable, attempting to create an “elixir of longevity” for the writer and work, the improvement of the writer as part of the process, and the production of a substance with unusual properties. It is such a great comparison, Mom. I couldn’t remember what “alchemy” meant before, and now I won’t forget.
