“Only you can prevent the forest fires of the mind” Then again, it may be too late…

I have a very dear friend I visited recently. She was so upset, she’s on the mend from some major surgery and has had some very tough experiences.

But I tried and tried and tried to explain that no matter what it’s up to you …ONLY YOU…. can create your own safe, content happy place in your world. Just like the old commercial about forest fires…Smokey was right about more than he knew…he was right about your entire life.

ONLY YOU CAN SAVE YOURSELF. ONLY YOU, ONLY YOU, ONLY YOU.

ONLY YOU CAN MAKE YOURSELF HAPPY.  NOT YOUR CHILDREN, NOT YOUR SPOUSE, NOT YOUR FRIENDS, ONLY YOU. SO LOVE YOURSELF MORE. BE HAPPY. LISTEN TO MUSIC THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY, READ OR WRITE STORIES THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY. TRY. REALLY TRY TO DELIGHT YOURSELF, THE ONLY JUDGE OF YOU IS YOU. SO BE KIND TO YOURSELF MOST OF ALL.

I found myself having this profound Smoky the Bear quote idea for this essay as I washed the outside of the garbage container for the Kitchen. Now, nobody is going to judge me about the appearance of the outside of my garbage container and yet I found myself arguing to get it done before I would give myself permission to set down and put this on paper. You would think I had a platoon of Judges hanging about my tiny empty kitchen yelling “Guilty, Guilty, Guilty!” I had to remind myself…nobody’s going to judge me but myself and at this point my getting things down in print is so much more vastly important to my happiness than the outside of that can.

I had to remind myself…”Sheila, only you!”   Only you can put down that washcloth and stop making yourself crazy and out of breath and sit and write and laugh and remind my dear friend, ONLY YOU. Oh, and p.s. I love you.

  1. It was SO GOOD to see Mrs. Grey and Laura! 🙂 I’m so glad we went! Thanks for spending a fun day with me, my Ma.

  2. Thanks, my girl. Can you believe I’m fighting with myself over washing a garbage can…talk about a “tempest in a teapot” more like round 1 with sheila/writer and sheila/guilty. Good thing the writer usually wins. She’s only in it for the laughs!!

    I love you.
