“Code-speak”, always go for Coffee

Dear Kids,

If you are ever asked to “Coffee” by your Aunts…please go. That is the new “code-speak” for Dying, please attend. You’ll notice it bears a striking familiarity to the story of Grandpa’s having Surgery and leaving a post-it note on the side door “If not home, I’ll be at Lakewood Hospital having surgery. Don’t make a federal case out of it.” Dad.

One wonders why we have such difficulty speaking aloud the terrors of this life, perhaps because if we cannot prevent them we at least hope to blunt them. So if your Aunts or Uncle Will call listen carefully and we’ll try to do the same with you…all without making a “Federal Case” out of it.
